The Australian federal government is expected to reject the recommendations made by an expert panel it appointed, which suggested a $34 billion welfare boost. The panel had deemed the current JobSeeker payment inadequate to meet the needs of Australians. The proposed increase would have brought the payment to just under $1000 per fortnight, which is about 90% of the aged pension. However, implementing this change alone would cost approximately $24 billion over four years. The report made a total of 37 recommendations, totaling around $34 billion. Despite this, the government is anticipated to reject the main suggestions. Treasurer Jim Chalmers has already lowered expectations for a significant increase to JobSeeker, stating that the government cannot fund every good idea. However, he has promised that there will be measures to address economic disadvantage in the forthcoming budget.
