Knife-wielding man shot dead after stabbing police officer - Sky News Australia

Two New South Wales Police officers are in a serious but stable condition after being injured during a confrontation with a knife-wielding man.

Police were called to a home in the Newcastle suburb of Wickham, about 2.5 hours from Sydney, after reports of stealing about 8am on Friday.

Two constables, aged 25 and 26, arrived to the Bishopsgate Street property where they were allegedly confronted by a man armed with a knife.

It’s alleged the man lunged at the police, stabbing one in the chest and injuring the second constable’s hands.

The man was shot and died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

Both officers were rushed to John Hunter Hospital where they remain in a serious but stable condition.

Investigators have launched a critical incident following the shooting.

Officers from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will investigate the circumstances leading up to the stabbing, including the use of a police firearm.

The incident will also be subject to an independent review.
