The animal behind the attack is believed to be a 1.5 metre Bronze Whaler.
A friend of Marsden’s was standing on the shoreline and helped him out of the water.
He then drove him through rough terrain to a waiting ambulance, taking him to hospital.
7NEWS understands he was expected to undergo surgery on his right arm overnight.
Lucy’s Beach was closed on Sunday following the attack but will reopen on Monday.
Shark attacks in Geraldton, particularly those involving Bronze Whalers, are rare.
The last reported incident involving a Bronze Whaler in WA was in Perth more than two years ago, when a surfer was knocked from his board.
Friends and family have paid tribute to Stella Berry, the teenage girl who died after she was attacked by a shark in the Swan River.
