Police have identified a woman whose body was found in a gruesome scene inside a western Sydney unit on Sunday night, as a strike force was established to identify those responsible for her death.
Erin Gilbert, 42, was found dead in her home on Newman Street in Merrylands by police responding to a concern for welfare call about 11.30pm on Sunday.
The Herald understands neighbours had heard a commotion from the apartment in the hours before the woman’s body was found with numerous injuries caused by a knife or blade.
Police spoke to a 38-year-old man at the scene who was known to the victim. He was taken to Granville Police Station to assist with inquiries, but has since been released.
Detectives, with assistance from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, commenced an investigation into the woman’s death under Strike Force Trevelyan.
A crime scene was established at the unit, and specialist forensic police spent all of Monday combing the scene and bagging evidence.
Police are set to provide more details on the woman’s death on Tuesday afternoon.
